5 Signs Your AC Is In Trouble

Experiencing an AC break down in the middle of a hot summer day can be a nuisance. Often, the AC shows signs before it breaks down that indicate that something is wrong. If you know what these signs are, you can save yourself from discomfort and get your AC fixed before it breaks down. These few signs can help you detect if there’s a problem and whether you need AC repairs in Pensacola. Let’s dive in:

1. Warm Air is Blowing Out of the AC Unit

Sometimes, the air conditioner stops blowing cool air effectively and may take longer to cool down the room or blow out warm/hot air. There may be a few reasons why warm air is blowing out of your air conditioner. Broken compressors, refrigerant or water leaks, low or high refrigerant levels, dirty and clogged filters, blockages limiting airflow, etc. can be the reason why your AC is blowing warm air. Before calling a professional, check the thermostat to see if the temperature setting is higher than what you had previously set it to.

2. Rising Humidity Levels

Air conditioners are built to regulate indoor humidity levels automatically. If the air conditioner is failing to do so, there may be a problem with your AC. The air inside your home may feel sticky or stuffy. High humidity levels can be dangerous because mold and fungal spores grow readily in such an environment.

It can also cause respiratory illnesses with prolonged exposure. Call an HVAC technician immediately to identify the source of the problem.

3. Moisture or Leaking Water

You might notice water dripping from the air conditioner or leaks around the AC system. This may be due to a clogged up drainage pipe redirecting the condensate, which is a quick fix but may indicate a bigger problem such as a refrigerant leak. This needs to be addressed quickly to avoid mold formation or structural issues in your home.

4. Unpleasant Smells and Odors

There may a musty smell emitting from the air conditioner. It can become highly unpleasant over time if not addressed quickly. Mold, which grows in the AC unit when the condensate fails to drain properly, is often to blame for the odor. The smell may worsen if the mold or bacteria isn’t removed from the AC unit.

A pungent smell may signify that the unit’s wire insulation is burned and needs to be replaced. The AC technician will try to identify the source of the odor and remove it so that your home can smell fresh again.

5. Unusual Sounds and Noises

AC units do make a low buzzing noise when they run, but this noise shouldn’t become loud and persistent. Some sounds you may notice are banging, squealing, screeching, hissing, etc. Most of these noises will come from the outer unit, so be sure to check the outer unit occasionally. There can be numerous sources of noise. Call a technician who can effectively diagnose the problem and perform AC repairs in Pensacola.
