3 Common Pool Heater Problems and How to Fix Them

Ahhh, the joys of having a pool during a Florida summer! But as hot as it can get at some points, at others, you would be miserably chilly in that water without your pool heater. Yes, a pool heater makes it possible to enjoy that pool anytime… as long as it’s working properly. But what if it isn’t? What if it’s behaving oddly or just not getting the water warm enough? Here are three of the issues you might spot with your pool heater and what to do if you encounter them.

The Pool is Not Warm Enough

There are many potential causes for a pool heater not adequately bringing your water to the desired temperature. The good news is that one of the most common ones is something you can check for and fix yourself. The filter needs to be cleaned regularly, ideally on a monthly basis. If the filter clogs up, it reduces the amount of water pressure that the heater receives. In order to work properly, the pool heater requires a steady water pressure, generally about 16 psi (pounds per square inch). If it’s not receiving enough water, it can’t heat enough water to bring the pool to temperature.

If you have cleaned the filter and it has not resolved your problem, it’s time for pool heater repair in Ensley, FL. Your technician will be able to determine the cause, which could be an issue with the safety switch, gas valve, thermostat, pilot light, or electrical components.

The Heater is Blackened or Smoking

If your pool heater looks sooty or black at the top, or if the exhaust is dark and smoky, you need to consult a professional. It’s likely that heat is building up too much while it is running, and you don’t want to let it continue running this way. Issues with the gas pressure, air supply, or ventilation can lead to this dirty exhaust and sooty mess.

The Water is Discolored or Contains Rust Flakes

Pool water contains some pretty harsh chemicals. While pool heaters are designed to withstand pool water, nothing can stand up against it forever. Eventually, corrosion will set in and your pool heater will develop rust. This is a problem you definitely need to catch promptly, so don’t delay in getting it repaired. If the corrosion is limited to specific components, the heater can be repaired simply by replacing those parts. If too much time goes by, the corrosion will spread, and the entire heater will be unsalvageable. In that case, you’ll need to replace it.

Avoiding Future Repair Needs

Pool heaters, like any other heating or cooling appliance, are not able to run smoothly for years if they are neglected. Proper pool heater care involves regular maintenance. Having a technician give your pool heater a checkup once a year can decrease wear and tear and catch tiny issues as they develop, before they require major repairs.

If you have any concerns about the performance of your pool heater, don’t hesitate to reach out.
