You’ve heard good things about ductless or mini-split heating and cooling systems. They have a lot of great benefits. But … your house already has ductwork. It was probably built in the seventies or more recently, when ducted systems for central air conditioning became common. So, you might wonder, should you still explore the possibility of a ductless system? Are there ways that you might derive some of those benefits, or would it be pointless to consider a mini-split for your home?

The simple answer is yes, there are situations where a ductless system would be a good choice, even in a home with existing ductwork. But abandoning your existing ductwork would not be the best option if it is still functional. It is an efficient method of distributing heated or air conditioned air throughout the house, and if you need to replace your air conditioner, sticking with the ducted system for a new AC unit or heat pump is probably your best bet.

So what scenarios might you encounter that would indicate that a ductless mini-split is a good choice?

Additions to Your Home

If you are building an extension to your existing house, a mini-split for just the new room or rooms might be a convenient way to avoid planning an extension to your ductwork system. Also, because your air conditioner and heater were selected with your square footage and home layout in mind, even extending your ductwork might not give you the cooling and heating capability you need for this new space.

Converted Spaces

One way that entirely-new additions to your home can be avoided while still giving you more living space is converting the use of existing space such as a garage or attic. These spaces can be insulated, sheet-rocked, painted, and carpeted to look like they were always intended to be part of the house—but they were never connected to the ductwork system of the original home. A ductless mini-split can heat and cool this additional area so you don’t need to worry about ducts.

Renovations

If you’re doing any major remodeling to a section of your home, it might keep more options open if you don’t need to preserve the existing ductwork for continued use. A mini-split can be used instead for that area.
